About Atomic Energy PAEC

The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) was first founded in 1956 as the Atomic Energy Research Council. In terms of scientific and technical personnel as well as the range of work it conducts, PAEC is currently the biggest science and technology organisation in the nation. The initial focus of nuclear energy applications was on peaceful usage, with the first nuclear power reactors being located in Karachi (KANUPP) and Nilore, Islamabad (PARR-I).

As national security concerns took centre stage, significant undertakings in this field were also started. In addition to carrying out development projects involving nuclear power plants and the production of electricity, PAEC is tasked with promoting and conducting research on the peaceful uses of atomic energy in the fields of agriculture, medicine, and industry. It is also expected to carry out any other tasks related to the peaceful uses of atomic energy that may be decided upon by the government and the commission. PAEC was admitted as a full member of the UICC in 1981.
